Look at the sympathetic adults in the book such as Anthony, the social workers from the Youth Housing Project, Detective Charles, and Officer Ryan. These adults try to help the homeless teens. Why do you think the homeless teens avoid and reject the offers of help and services available to them?
They rejected the offer because they do not want to fallow any rules. The homeless teens think that they can live on the streets and be okay. They think that all the adults are the same meaning like horrible people and like robots. The street kids think that the adults lie on things they say and don't care about them. They think that adults are sickos and the only thing they want is little boys and girls.
"Endless amounts of water. And you feel like you could wash in it. Wash away everything bad. Every crappy unfair thing that ever happened to you, gone. Then you could start over again. A whole new beginning just like the day you were born."
Detective Charles is telling Maybe to get of the streets. To make a new life. A new beginning. He want her to start out all fresh and leave the streets. This is like for most prisoners they want to start a new life. Most people around the world want to do the same too. They want all the bad things to go away and start of new.
